Chelsea moves closer to title

Avram Grant's side were gifted the lead when Richard Dunne diverted Nicolas Anelka's cross into his own net.
City responded by creating a succession of good chances and Carlo Cudicini did well to keep out Martin Petrov's shot.
But Salomon Kalou rounded Joe Hart and slotted home to give Chelsea breathing space, and only two superb Hart saves stopped Anelka adding to their tally.

It was a vital win for Chelsea and means they maintain the pressure on United, who travel to play Middlesbrough on Sunday.
Grant was in charge when Chelsea thumped City 6-0 at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season and the way they began this game suggested they would enjoy another walk in the park.
The visitors were well on top even before Dunne diverted Anelka's cross past Hart while trying to prevent it from reaching Michael Essien.
Only a superb saving tackle by Nedum Onuoha stopped Anelka when he broke free again minutes later as Grant's side continued to press.

Things looked ominous for City, who have gone off the boil badly in recent weeks and have only won three of their last 15 league games.
But they responded well and with better finishing could have been level by the break.
Petrov rattled one shot wide and Michael Johnson skied a volley when well placed.
City went even closer when Benjani pulled the ball back for Stephen Ireland, who saw his goalbound shot cannon over off Juliano Belletti's leg.

And it took a superb save from Cudicini to tip over out Petrov's next effort - which was heading for the top corner - before Ashley Cole had to clear Johnson's deflected shot off the line.
Chelsea were still looking dangerous on the break and only another superb Onuoha tackle stopped Anelka when he found more space in the area.
But it was not until Kalou scored their second goal that they looked at all comfortable with the lead.
Essien was involved again in the build-up, with his pass deflecting off the luckless Dunne and into the path of the Ivory Coast striker, who finished with aplomb.

That ended City's hopes of getting anything from the game and if not for Hart they would have suffered an even heavier defeat.
The England Under-21 star did well to deny Anelka in a one-on-one situation when he ran through seconds after Kalou had scored.
And Hart made an even better stop when he tipped the Frenchman's header on to the bar before recovering to paw away the rebound.

Chelsea can head into the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Fenerbahce on Tuesday with renewed confidence.
But City's slump continues and a serious-looking injury to Onuoha, who was stretchered off in pain before the end, added to what was a frustrating afternoon for their manager Sven-Goran Eriksson

AVRAM GRANT SHOULD BE SACKED

i was totally dissapointed with avram grant and his tactics yesterday as chelsea lost the first leg quarter finals match in instanbul.it was clear that the coach lacked tactical tenerity and could not read the match to know when to change players and who to replace.

personally,i am fed up with avram grants pattern of play, imagine, playing didier drogba as a lone striker in a match we needed to win?very pathetic.i believe its time chelsea begins to shop for a new coach,or what do you think.

comments to this post will be highly appreciated to help our darling team go past the quarter finals of the 2008 champions league

CHELSEA Vs FENARBACHE

VS

The first leg of the next stage in the Champions League for both Fenerbahce and Chelsea will take place on 2 April 2008. Now that the Champions League has entered an intense knock-out stage where only 8 teams remain - football tickets for these matches are in great demand. One can only imagine how many people will be looking for Champions league final tickets when they are available for purchase online.Chelsea will be confident going into the match and hopefully everyone will be able to get hold of football tickets for this match, but if you miss the first leg make sure you get hold of champions league tickets for the second leg.

i believe that it will be an easy ride for chelsea with the confidence and moral booster from their win against arsenal.hopefully, there are no injury worries in Avram Grant's squad for the epic battle.the likes of Didier Drogba,Frank lampard, skilful Joe Cole and Micheal Essien are all injury free and playing at home in stamford bridge i expect chelsea to triumph over the turkish side with at least 3 unreplied goals.

lampard comments on super sunday

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is a doubt for England's friendly in France on Wednesday evening due to a hip injury.
The 29-year-old picked up the knock during the Blues' crucial 2-1 win over
Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and is waiting to see how the problem settles down.

He said after the game: "I took a knock on my hip during the first half and it was pretty painful.
"I am still going to report for England duty and see how it is."
Meanwhile, Blues head coach Avram Grant hailed his side's display against the
Gunners, which saw them move into second place in the Premier League.

He added: "I have always said to the players when we were chasing
Arsenal and Manchester United, many points behind them, that we only wanted to be able to be in this position.
"That when they come to Stamford Bridge it can be a game which if we win we can go ahead of them.

Today, we did that.
"We played good football from the beginning and we responded very well from going behind.
"I don't know if we can win the title now, but we will be doing our best to do it.

"It is important we play attacking football and score goals. For me, this is more important than any other way and I will keep doing things in the way that I am
.".

Drogba backs chelsea for title

Two-goal hero Didier Drogba insists the strength of Chelsea's performance against Arsenal can inspire the team to further success this season.

The Ivorian striker also believes the hard-earned victory may have knocked Arsenal out of the Barclays Premier League title race as Chelsea moved into second position in the table.

Drogba declared: "Arsenal are not there now, they lost the game, maybe it is going to be difficult for their confidence, I don't know, but I just try to look at my team and I think we did a good job.

"It is always difficult to play against Arsenal but we were compact and strong, we deserved it."
Bacary Sagna had put Arsenal in front but Chelsea stormed back with Drogba's double keeping them well in the hunt for the Barclays Premier crown just five points behind Manchester United.

"It was an important win because it gives us the strength and the belief that we can still be champions," explained Drogba.
Joe Cole produced another outstanding performance against Arsenal and hinted that Arsene Wenger's side crumpled under their intense onslaught.

Cole said: "We both wanted to win the game so it was end to end, a draw wouldn't have been good for either of us, so we got the spoils.
"We were just a little bit more aggressive with our play.
"We got in their faces a little bit and when Didier plays as well as that you have got to use him, so we just kept knocking the ball up to his chest and joining him from there.

"We still think we can do it but we have to hope that Manchester United drop points and we win all of our games, but we will keep going, we are on a good run."

42 mins: Ballack hits a volley towards goal but Almunia gets across to make a smart save down by his post.

40 mins: Flamini trips Lampard and Chelsea have a free-kick 35 yards out. Up come the big men.
